Do you feel like you waste too much time online on entertainment that’s not actually getting you closer to your goals? Let me help you with that by giving you 4 rules to try so that you can be more productive online and so that entertainment doesn’t take your whole day!
Here is the challenge with entertainment: Once you fail with your entertainment goal its very hard to stop, because if you say okay 2 games a day, but if you fail and do 3 its hard to stop since in your mind ” I already failed I might as well keep playing”.
The internet can help or hurt depends on how you use it, if you can use the internet for more success habits it can help you reach your life goals.
Rule 1: Pre plan your entertainment time:
It’s okay to have entertainment but the problem comes from unplanned entertainment, like just going on social media scrolling whenever with no plan. That’s where most people fail.
This is the solution: step 1: set a Max entertainment time: example: 20:00, or 2 8 ball pool games a day then stop.
This allows you to still have entertainment, but it trains you to stop momentum instead of letting it control your time.
You can track progress on Google docs such as: Total games done: 2 games for ( today’s date), you could highlight it like blue if succeed, or red if you failed ( did more than your entertainment limit for the day). Same with all of your online entertainment, you could do 1 Google doc per thing like YouTube, 8 ball pool, social media scrolling. or all in 1 Google doc!
Rule 2: Use the internet for success habits only is the end goal: ( if you are highly ambitious!)
Over time you want to spend more and more of your waking minutes on success habits, that’s a great way to stop bad habits also!
Examples of success habits you could start today: push-ups, eating vegetables, drinking enough water, networking, etc. ( so instead of entertainment YouTube videos it would be self improvement YouTube videos like: How to start an Online Business!)
Think about it: what sounds more fun: 8 ball pool app or real 8 ball pool table? haha
Remember this golden rule: It’s easier not to start momentum than to try to stop in the middle of momentum. ( It’s easier not to play at all than to stop if you did more than 2 games)
Rule #3: The first time that you get distracted online, write the time and the reason:
You can use a paper or online notes for this, and the first time you get distracted for a unique reason write it down.
Example: 10:20am: you randomly checked TikTok, 10:40am: You got an 8 ball pool notification than started playing.
You can Plan when you want to start your entertainment like: Two 8 ball pool games at 6:00pm or after supper, but if you started playing at say 2:30pm you can write the reason why.
This helps keep you accountable because: 1. You don’t want to fail because if you do you know when you did and the reason. 2. You will know the reasons why you procrastinate and can then learn solutions to those reasons. 3. You can think of it as a game: Objective: How many days can I follow my entertainment plan without failing? ( And say your record is 10 days, you can then try to beat that record!)
Rule #4: Use 2 timers and pre write the 1 task that you want to do before you go online:
Example: 20 minutes YouTube Entertainment, than set a 20 minute timer, or Online courses: 20 minutes, set timer. This makes sure you have a time limit so most of the time you don’t go over it, but depends on what you are doing especially for success habits its okay to go over the time limit.
Like if you are doing editing a YouTube video, and set a 25 minute timer, you might go over that limit and that’s okay
The 2nd timer: Tells you how long you spend on that task, so if you fail with entertainemt set a phone timer to know how long it took you. Or if you are editing a YouTube video than second timer starting at 0:00 will tell you how long that habit took!
- Entertainemt time example you could try: 20-30 minutes max if you play video games, 20 minutes a day YouTube/movie entertianment, 5 minutes checking social media notifications after morning routine, 5 minutes social media scrolling after morning routine.
Start with writing these 4 rules on a paper or post it note: So that you can always see it and so that you can use the internet for success habits instead of just entertainment! Good luck.
